The Tasmanian Government is improving the West Tamar Highway between Launceston and Legana. Following community consultation in 2020 and 2021, the Department of State Growth developed the West Tamar Corridor Improvement Plan which identified a number of high priority projects to improve safety, traffic flow, and prepare for growth in the West Tamar region.

Six of these projects between Trevallyn and Riverside have been progressed to the design stage. We have completed our engineering investigations and have developed the designs for these projects that consider connectivity for those who walk, wheel, and ride, traffic flow, accessibility and safety for all road users.

This project involves construction of a new staggered signalised pedestrian crossing across the West Tamar Highway near the Brownfield Lane junction. We will also install a median pedestrian refuge on the West Tamar Highway. This will look similar to the upgrades on the highway near Orana Place. Click the image below to enlarge.

This project involves realignment of the intersection of Allawah Street and the West Tamar Highway (Launceston bound). We are also upgrading four pedestrian access ramps including new tactile ground surface indicators in line with Disability Discrimination Act 1992 requirements. Click the image below to enlarge.

This project involves construction of a new refuge island and slip lane with a raised pedestrian crossing for the left turn out of Windsor Drive, as well as upgrading the existing refuge island and slip lane for the left turn into Ecclestone Road. We will also be upgrading the left turn into Ecclestone Road to a raised pedestrian crossing.

The project includes the addition of a single stage pedestrian crossing across the West Tamar Highway on the Launceston side of the intersection, and the addition of a right turn opportunity with a dedicated green arrow for traffic turning right out of Ecclestone Road. This project involves the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Forest Road (south) and the West Tamar Highway, with the addition of a dedicated green right turn arrow for vehicles turning into or out of Forest Road.

A signalised pedestrian crossing will also be installed, increasing pedestrian connectivity with the existing West Tamar Walking Trail and relocated bus stop. Click the image below to enlarge.

This project aims to improve safety for road users at the Riverview Road intersection, by adding a new U-turn lane for Launceston bound vehicles on the West Tamar Highway to access Riverview Road. Click the image below to enlarge.

This project provides a shared use path between Tailrace Park and the Windsor Community Precinct, as well as multiple raised pedestrian crossings over intersections. Please click here to view the design.
