Why we engage

We engage with communities and stakeholders so that your values, interests, needs, and desires are included in decisions that impact your life. This helps us to understand problems, to find opportunities and solutions, and to better manage risks.

We engage with you to share information and understand your needs better. This helps us to:

  • build relationships with those impacted by our work
  • spot and deal with new issues early on
  • work with communities to solve problems
  • explain our decision-making process and what can and cannot be resolved.

Our stakeholders are:

  • anyone affected or impacted by our work
  • anyone interested in our outcomes and actions
  • anyone influencing decision-making on our projects.

Everyone in the Tasmanian community is a stakeholder of Transport Tasmania.

Transport Tasmania Community Engagement Framework

We follow the ‘Levels of Engagement’ guidelines set by the Engagement Institute (formerly the International Association of Public Participation) for effective engagement on our projects.

These guidelines help us tailor engagement and communications to suit the needs of the project and of the community. Our aim is to provide the information you need to participate fully in consultation activities, understand our actions, and why we have made certain decisions.

The ‘Levels of Engagement’ explains to people how and why they are being involved on our projects, so you know what to expect from us.

Our engagement principles

We follow these engagement principles to ensure we meet the needs of our community under our Framework.
  • We communicate with a purpose

We understand why we are engaging and communicate this clearly through our planning and implementation.

We know who our stakeholders are and seek to understand their needs and build relationships based on trust and respect.

  • We plan engagement

We recognise that our stakeholders have busy lives, and we will use a range of engagement techniques to ensure we make engagement easy and relevant.

We communicate early and often, ensuring ‘no surprises’ for communities and stakeholders.

  • We are accountable

We invest time to develop our knowledge, and we ensure good record-keeping.

We refer to records, experts and stakeholders to understand the history and background information relevant to inform project decisions.

  • We are dependable

We manage engagement activities to budget and timeframes.

We have a transparent process of decision-making.

We follow through on our commitments, and we ensure our actions match our words.

Engagement on our projects

Stakeholder engagement can happen once, several times or continuously during a project depending on how big or complicated the project is.
