Introduction

The Tasmanian Government will complete targeted upgrades along 24km of the Tasman Highway between Scottsdale and St Patricks River in Tasmania’s north-east, known as the Sideling.

The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have committed $120 million to the project. We are investigating the most effective ways to deliver further upgrades to improve safety, including:

  • road widening
  • safety barriers
  • road strengthening
  • junction upgrades
  • passing bays, and
  • improved visibility for drivers.

The upgrades will improve freight access and efficiency, including travel time reliability between Bridport, Scottsdale and Launceston. They will also result in an improved driving experience for locals and better access to destinations in Tasmania’s north-east for visitors and tourists.

The Department of State Growth invites feedback to help identify the most appropriate upgrades. The public consultation is open between Tuesday, 20 May 2025 and Sunday, 8 June 2025.
