Introduction
Tasmania is one of only five internationally recognised gateways to Antarctica. Many elements contribute to our gateway’s ongoing success:
- Tasmania’s port and airport infrastructure connect the world with Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
- Major research institutions and international organisations are based in Tasmania and facilitate scientific collaboration on issues of global importance.
- Tasmanian businesses have embraced the opportunities presented through the Antarctic and Southern Ocean sector, specialising in niche polar products and services.
The Tasmanian Antarctic Gateway Strategy 2022-27 sets out the Tasmanian Government’s objectives for our gateway. The strategy informs policy on Antarctic and Southern Ocean issues, facilitates opportunities for Tasmanian businesses, and creates greater visibility of the sector across the Tasmanian community.
As 2027 approaches, it is appropriate to develop a new strategy with fresh goals and objectives, and a contemporary approach. The new strategy will be developed in the 2026 and 2027 calendar years and will make short-, medium- and long-term recommendations for strategic priorities for the sector.
Consultation
The process for developing the new strategy will involve stakeholder consultation to:
- Review the role of the Tasmanian Antarctic gateway.
- Assess the emerging environment for the sector nationally and internationally.
- Identify opportunities and make recommendations for strategic priorities for the Tasmanian Antarctic gateway.
Whether you are involved in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean sector or not, we want to hear from individuals, businesses, and organisations to ensure the strategy reflects the full diversity of voices and opportunities.
Your input will be invaluable for informing the long-term future of the Tasmanian Antarctic gateway and we want to ensure your views are included.
We invite you to provide feedback on any, or all, of the questions in this survey – answers can be as brief or as detailed as you like.
