Audit details

On 21 September 2018, a comprehensive motorcycle safety audit was conducted on Lake Leake Road, covering the section from Campbell Town to the Tasman Highway near Swansea, a span of approximately 57.4 kilometres.


Between 2008 and 2018, 27 motorcycle crashes were recorded along this route. With three crashes resulting in fatalities and eleven in serious injuries. Of the 27 crashes, 18 were from non-Tasmanian residents indicating the routes popularity as a touring route.

Infrastructure treatments informed by the audit were completed in 2022. This includes:


Curve Advisory Markers:

  • 102 curve advisory markers installed to enhance line-of-sight and rider awareness through curved road sections.


Speed Advisory Signage:

  • 13 speed signs installed.


Additional Warning Signage:

  • 1 crest advisory warning sign installed.
  • 1 T-intersection warning sign installed.


Winding Road Advance Warning Signage:

  • 5 winding road warning signs installed.


Motorcycle safety barriers:

  • 821 metres of new motorcycle-friendly Ezy-Guard safety barrier installed at priority locations. Additional upgrades were also undertaken to existing safety barriers too.
