Audit Details
On 6 March 2023, an audit was conducted on the Channel Highway, between Margate and Verona Sands. During the audit the route was assessed to determine improvements that could be made to make the road safer for motorcyclists.
The Channel Highway was selected due to its popularity and taking into consideration the crash history of the route. In the last 10 years, there has been one fatal crash and six seriously injured. Additionally, 13 motorcyclists were involved in crashes and received minor injuries or required first aid.
The audit brought together experienced motorcyclists, road managers and stakeholders to identify solutions to improve road safety outcomes for motorcyclists. A small group rode the route to record data about the ride. A larger group of stakeholders and experts then came together for a workshop to discuss the findings from the ride.
Following the audit, a schedule of works for the recommended infrastructure treatments was developed.
Updates
Infrastructure works commenced in early 2024 and were completed in May 2024.
The works included improved advisory signage, chevrons, and additional safety barrier fitted with ‘rub rail’, protecting motorcyclists from impacts with the barrier support posts.
The Department of State Growth is now undertaking a post implementation survey on the Channel Highway route, between Margate and Verona Sands, following the completion of the infrastructure treatments.
We ask that you complete the survey if you attended the Channel Highway Audit or if you regularly ride this route as a motorcyclist.
