About the project

The Department of State Growth is undertaking an infrastructure study on the Port of Grassy, to better understand how King Island's industry and community use the port.

A 2008 study proposed significant investment to extend the harbour and increase port capacity, which was not progressed at the time. The Tasmanian Government has committed to revisiting and completing this study by engaging with key stakeholders and the King Island community to identify potential improvements to port infrastructure and operations.

Burbury Consulting and ERA Planning and Environment have been engaged to undertake the study.

  • Role of the Port

King Island’s economy is supported by agriculture, fishing, mining and tourism. These industries rely on sea freight handled through the Port of Grassy.

The port provides a docking place for vessels to load and unload freight cargo, livestock and passengers, making it a vital component of the King Island supply chain.

  • Port infrastructure

This project focusses on port infrastructure, including the wharf, breakwater and harbour.

It will also consider functional infrastructure like the roll-on, roll-off ramp, sheds and storage, amenities, and equipment such as containers and trailers.

  • Port operations

This project focusses on port operations, including hours of operation, lighting, seasonality, and weather management.

It will also consider how the port manages environmental (marine) constraints, and on-island supply chain issues directly related to port operations.

Online survey

An important part of this study is engaging with the King Island community and key stakeholders. This helps us get a better understanding of the port's current infrastructure and operations, and hear about your suggestions for improvement.
