Have your say on making Huon Highway and Mountain River Road safer for everyone
The Department of State Growth is progressing the upgrade of the Huon Highway, Mountain River Road and Turn Creek Road intersection and has developed four design options to improve safety and access at the intersection.
The four options are:
- Option A – Huon Highway pedestrian refuge crossing
- Option B – relocate bus stops to Mountain River Road
- Option C – staggered intersection
- Option D – pedestrian overpass.
These four options were chosen as the best out of more than 10 options that we explored through an options analysis. They were chosen using a criteria which looked at pedestrian connectivity, access to bus stops, car pick-up and drop-off areas, and safety for all road users at the intersection.
We want your feedback on four design options. We want to look at the pros and cons of each of these options, alongside other aspects such as feasibility and cost to develop a preferred option. The preferred option may be a combination of design features from different options or something different altogether.
Your feedback helps us understand your preferences, and the issues, impacts and benefits of each option. This feedback will inform the preferred final designs for the intersection so we can upgrade it as soon as possible.
Community members can have their say on the four design options from Monday, 26 May 2025 to Sunday, 22 June 2025.
In-person information sessions:
We are holding three in-person events, where you can view and discuss the options with members of our team:
Date: Tuesday, 27 May 2025
Time and Venue: 5.00 pm to 8.00 pm, Mountain River Hall, 263 Mountain River Road, Mountain River
Date: Wednesday, 28 May 2025
Time and Venue: 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm, Huonville Library, 1 Skinner Drive, Huonville.
Date: Saturday, 14 June 2025
Time and Venue: 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, Huonville Library, 1 Skinner Drive, Huonville.
The four design options
Option A includes the establishment of a pedestrian refuge crossing on Huon Highway and Mountain River Road, allowing pedestrians to stop and cross the road one section at a time. The current bus stops would remain on Huon Highway but would be upgraded to be more accessible. Car pick-up and drop-off areas would be provided on Mountain River Road and Turn Creek Road, reducing the need for passengers to cross the road.
This option still requires pedestrians to cross the Huon Highway to access the Grove Store from the southbound bus stop. It also involves a small amount of land acquisition.
Design option only - subject to further design, consultation and approvals.
This option would relocate bus stops located on Huon Highway to Mountain River Road, reducing the need for pedestrians to cross the Huon Highway between the south bound bus stop and Grove Store.
Option B includes an area where pedestrians can stop (pedestrian refuge) allowing them to cross Mountain River Road one section at a time. Additionally, it would provide a car pick-up and drop-off area on Mountain River Road. The construction of this option on Mountain River Road would not disrupt the Huon Highway traffic.
This option requires significant land acquisition to enable buses to turn around. Buses would need to turn right onto, and out of Mountain River Road, which may be risky. The requirement for buses to turn off the Huon Highway may negatively impact travel time, timetables and connections. This might result in a reduction of bus services to the broader Huonville region.Design option only - subject to further design, consultation and approvals.
Turn Creek Road will be realigned to create a staggered intersection. It includes establishing a pedestrian refuge crossing on Huon Highway and Mountain River Road, allowing pedestrians to stop and cross the highway and road in sections.
The current northbound bus stop location would be retained, while the southbound bus stop would be relocated further south on Huon Highway to allow for the new alignment on Turn Creek Road. Additionally, a car pick-up and drop-off area would be established on both Mountain River Road and Turn Creek Road.
This option does not impact bus operations and includes both bus stops being upgradeed to be more accessible. It also improves safety for vehicles using the intersection. Car pick up and drop off areas on both Mountain River Road and Turn Creek Road minimise the need for bus passengers to cross the highway.
This option still requires pedestrians to cross Huon Highway to access the Grove Store from the southbound bus stop.
Design option only - subject to further design, consultation and approvals.
Option D includes an accessible pedestrian overpass above Huon Highway. The current northbound and southbound bus stop locations on Huon Highway would be retained but would be upgraded to be more accessible. This option would also create a pedestrian refuge on Mountain River Road, allowing pedestrians to stop and cross one section of the road at a time. It would create car pick-up and drop-off areas on both sides of the highway.
The overpass will take pedestrians approximately 4 minutes to cross the Huon Highway.
There is a risk that pedestrians may not use the overpass and still cross directly over the Huon Highway as it is quicker. It also involves significant land acquisition with property impacts to landowners.
Design option only - subject to further design, consultation and approvals.
What’s next?
A preferred option for the intersection upgrade will be developed after considering the consultation feedback, feasibility, and cost. This preferred option will be subject to detailed design to refine and ensure the final design meets all project requirements.
