E-bikes in Tasmania

E-bikes are a sustainable and enjoyable transport option that is growing in popularity. But Tasmania’s hilly terrain can be challenging and our dispersed population means many residents have long commutes through urban, regional and rural areas.

Tasmania’s e-bike regulations support the safe and responsible integration of e-bikes into Tasmania’s transport system. They should reflect that our population’s needs are different to those in flatter, more densely populated areas.

The project

In 2023, the Tasmanian Government committed to reviewing e-bike regulations to manage user needs, ensure public safety and consider whether changes are needed.

Early targeted consultation occurred in May and June 2024 with experts from around Australia. Then workshops were held in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie with stakeholders from local government, emergency services, research organisations, transport groups, local bike businesses, bike user groups, bus operators, and disability and health service community groups.

Broader feedback from the Tasmanian community was sought from 16 September to 11 November 2024. Feedback that has been received is currently being reviewed.
